why does no one ever like. mention the weird part of all of our childhoods where we thought we were too cool for the shows we grew up with like i Know that wasnt just an isolated thing like everyone used to make fun of dora the explorer and barney especially i remember everyone used to sing to the tune of barney “i hate you, you hate me, lets strap barney to a tree, with a great big bomb and stick it through his head, 3-2-1 barneys dead” like….. that was so fucked,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, why was that a thing……
we used to sing “i hate you, you hate me, let’s all go and kill barney, with a baseball and a two by four, no more purple dinosaur”

How did it even happen, there was no internet for us to get our grubby little paws on, no memes making fun of children’s shows, it was just a bunch of small telepathically linked children hating a purple dinosaur in unison ???
Over here in Malaysia and Singapore I’ve heard (and learned to sing) “I hate you, you hate me, let’s all go and kill Barney. With a great big gun, Barney’s on the floor. No more stupid dinosaur.”
It just creeps me out that kids from other countries do the same thing. Where the hell did we learn this from??
Anyone else here know of the Joy to the World version? Went some something like “Joy to the world, Barney is dead. We barbecued his head. Don’t worry about the body, we flushed it down the potty. And round and round it goes (x3).“ Like seriously, what the hell did this purple dinosaur do to make us all so violent
I seem to recall that hatred of Barney was one guy’s motivation for dragging himself out of a coma.
I’ve heard both of those songs!
My only personal dislike of Barney was because he got my favorite color combo of purple and green mocked. I still wore it!
@adobe-outdesign and @batter-sempai I had both of those at my super conservative Christian school in America. How did we have the same songs literal oceans apart?
I have no idea. It seems to be an international thing but there’s no explaination as to why we all knew that song as kids.
I alternated between genuinely being in that phase and going “wait this is stupid barney was fun when i was little,” but honestly those pockets of recovery were mostly based on spite because my cousins used to make fun of me for being little and liking Barney.
Either way, I sang this too. Sometimes wholeheartedly, sometimes not, but always with spite in my heart
That’s fine. I loved Barney a lot as a kid, even when I was at the age of singing those songs. It’s weird.
I guess I sort of had a love-hate relationship with the show? Like a begrudging love for it. So I still enjoyed watching the show despite singing those songs.
