Fun fact!
For those of you that have long coat dogs and horses, when you brush them save the hair and put it out in branches for birds.
It’s a really good insulating material for their nests and it doesn’t rot like yarn or material would out in the elements. 🙂
This is true and a good thing to do this time of year. You can also leave out cat, rabbit, goat or other domestic animal hair for them too.
Small caution: If your pet has gotten Dermal flea/tick medication (the drops you put on the back of the neck, not the pills) in the last week or wears a flea collar, thier fur is not safe for birds. If it’s been more than a week since dermal medication was given, thier fur shoudbe safe again. Internal (pill/chew) flea/tick meds will not effect birds.
Other things you can leave out for nesting birds:
- Natutral/biodegradeable fabic scraps like cotton or wool, but not nylon/polyester other plastic-derived ones, as they can tangle around bird feet and are too tough to pick off.
- Yard slash like lawn trimmings, leaves, hedge clippings, downed branches etc. A slash pile makes both good nesting material and good hunting for birds, becuase they can look for bugs in the leaf litter.
- pie-pan or flat dish with about half an inch of water in it for drinking/bathing, kept in the shade.
