Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, and I want to take this moment to remind you that the world is better because you are in it.
Suicide affects our LGBTQ+ communities in a very real way, and it’s not always easy to talk or even think about. But the thing to remember is that suicide is preventable, that there is always help available, and that you matter.
If you or someone you know needs help, today or any day of the year, here are some resources for you:
- The Trevor Project (for LGBTQ+ youth): 1-866-488-7386
- The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (for anyone): 1-800-273-8255
- Trans Lifeline (run by and for trans people): (877) 565-8860 (United States) or (877) 330-6366 (Canada)
- Crisis Text Line (if you’d rather text than talk): Text START to 741-741
- A database of international suicide helplines
- A list of support groups from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, including support if you’ve lost someone, you’re worried about someone, or you’re a survivor
- Tips on what to do if someone you know may be suicidal
- If you just need a hug
I love you lots. So do lots of other people.
