epic-and-kitty:

People have self insert x canon characters, be they romantic or platonic. They have them because they are fun and harmless and just really like the character in question.

People call those people cringy.

But some people, like me, have self insert x canon because it helps us cope with trauma.

When you can have your favorite character love you regardless of your past trauma or self hate, it makes you feel like maybe your not as horrible as you thought you were. They tell you its okay to feel the way you do, that you are not overreacting to the things that traumatise you. They tell you you aren’t your trauma, and if you you can’t find you you are past your trauma that its okay, you have time to figure it out. That, yes what happened was trauma, and no, what happened wasn’t Ok.

Blogs like the imaginary boyfriend Sans blog, or headcanon blogs, or roleplaying blogs help people deal with trauma and/or mental illness by having someone, even if they are fictional, care and love them when it seems there is no one to turn to.

Yes, most self shippers are just having fun. They don’t have trauma or mental illness to deal with, and I’m glad that they don’t.

But some of us use our self ships to cope, and there is nothing wrong with it.

But people still call us cringy, because our coping mechanisms aren’t what they call normal.

Would I still ship myself with Ink if I had absolutely no trauma? Yes.

But it would still be wrong if someone called it “the cancer of the internet"

Just something to think about
